As a newborn photographer in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, I’ve heard so many worries from parents about their newborn’s photoshoot — and I completely understand. Welcoming a new life into the world is overwhelming, and the thought of planning a photoshoot might feel like just another thing on your list. But here’s the truth: these sessions are meant to be calm, gentle, and filled with love — just like those first precious days with your little one.

Let’s bust some of the most common myths about newborn photography together:

“I have to book after my baby is born.”

Actually, the best time to book your newborn session is during pregnancy — ideally in your second trimester. Babies have their own unique timelines, and by booking early, we can plan ahead and make sure there’s a spot reserved for your newest family member. Once your baby arrives, all you have to do is cuddle them — I’ll handle the rest.

“Newborn sessions are only for babies under 2 weeks.”

While those first two weeks are perfect for capturing those sleepy, curled-up poses, every stage is beautiful. If your baby is a little older, don’t worry — we can still create stunning portraits that reflect their personality, whether it’s through wide-eyed curiosity or heart-melting stretches and yawns.

“If my baby doesn’t sleep, the session is ruined.”

Oh, not at all! Babies are beautifully unpredictable. Some sleep soundly through their session, while others stay awake and take in their new world. I capture every little moment — the tiny yawns, the curious gazes, the soft blinks. Your baby is perfect exactly as they are, awake or asleep.

“I need to bring all the outfits and props.”

You don’t need to bring a thing! My studio in Mullingar is fully stocked with soft wraps, adorable outfits, delicate headbands, and a variety of props and backdrops. I’ve thoughtfully gathered pieces that create timeless, elegant portraits — all you need to bring is your baby (and maybe a few extra cuddles).

“Newborn photos only work if my baby is calm.”

Babies cry, wiggle, and fuss — it’s what they do, and it’s completely normal. I use gentle soothing techniques and take breaks as needed, letting the session flow at your baby’s pace. No pressure, no stress — just capturing your baby’s sweet little moments as they naturally unfold.

Now that you know the truth behind these myths, there’s no need to worry. Just bring your baby to me, and I’ll take care of everything. From the cozy wraps to the perfect props, I’ll create a peaceful, loving environment where we capture the beauty of these early days. All you have to do is relax and enjoy watching your little one shine.
