As a newborn and family photographer based in Mullingar, I’ve had the privilege of capturing so many precious moments for families as they start their beautiful journeys together.
One of the most heartfelt things you can do to cherish those early memories is to create a family memory box—a place to keep all the little treasures that tell the story of your family’s beginning.
The idea of a memory box is simple, yet so special. It’s a tangible collection of the tiny, significant things that will one day take you back to those fleeting early moments. I can’t tell you how many times parents have shared with me how certain keepsakes have transported them back to their baby’s first giggle, first step, or first smile.
Here’s a guide on what to include in your family memory box, and how it can become something so much more than just a box of mementos.
Ultrasound Pictures and Birth Announcements
As parents, we hold our little ones in our arms, but before we met them, we had the chance to see them in ways we never thought possible—through ultrasound pictures. Those black-and-white images are so much more than just a preview of what’s to come. They are the first visual representations of your baby and a reminder of the excitement and anticipation you felt as you waited to hold them. Include your ultrasound photos, along with any birth announcements you may have created or received, to keep that moment of anticipation alive.
Baby Clothes and Blankets
There's nothing quite like the softness of a newborn’s first blanket or the tiny clothes they wear. You might not be able to remember how small they were, but you will always remember the feeling of wrapping your baby up in those cozy, soft fabrics. Include the blanket they came home in from the hospital or their first little outfit. These clothes will carry memories of those early days, and someday, when they’re all grown up, it will be a beautiful way to reflect on just how little they once were.
Photographs and Birth Story
Of course, photographs are at the heart of any memory box. Whether you have professional newborn photographs or ones captured on your phone, print them out and include them in your box. These images tell the story of your little one’s first days at home, the first time they smiled, or the first time they met their grandparents. I’m sure you’ll find there’s something about having physical photos to flip through that brings even more warmth to the memories.
Beyond photos, you might also want to add a written birth story—whether it’s a handwritten letter or a typed-up account of your little one’s arrival. You’ll be so grateful for it one day, and it’s something your children might cherish when they’re old enough to read it.
Letters and Cards
Family and friends often send letters or cards to welcome a new baby into the world. These words, filled with love and good wishes, are little gifts that add to the sense of community and support you feel as a new parent. Be sure to save those heartfelt messages and include them in your memory box. Years down the road, when your child looks through the cards, they’ll feel surrounded by the love that was there from the very start.
First Tooth, Lock of Hair, or Special Trinkets
Some of the most personal keepsakes in your memory box may be the smallest things—a lock of hair from their first haircut, their first tooth (when it comes out!), or a special trinket that they loved as a baby. These little tokens may seem small, but they’ll carry great meaning as the years go by.
You might even add a small piece of the blanket they loved to cuddle with or a favourite stuffed animal that became their comfort. These items will always be reminders of their innocence and the special bond you shared in those early years.
Family Handprints or Footprints
Another touching idea is to include your baby’s handprints or footprints. You can have these professionally done or use a DIY kit that’s available in stores. They’re a lovely representation of how small your little one once was and will make a beautiful keepsake to look back on as they grow. You could even add handprints or footprints from other family members, creating a timeline of growth and love.
A Special Family Letter
One of my favourite things to suggest to new parents is writing a letter to your child to be opened in the future. This could be a message from both parents or even from siblings or extended family. Express your hopes and dreams for them, and tell them what it felt like to meet them for the first time. Perhaps, living in Mullingar, you could even write about your favourite places around town and how you envision them growing up here—whether it’s a walk along Lough Ennell or a trip to Belvedere House & Gardens. This letter will mean so much to them as they grow and learn about the love that surrounded them from the very beginning.
A Piece of Your Heart
The most important thing to remember is that your memory box should be a reflection of your unique family and your personal journey. Include things that hold meaning to you, no matter how big or small. It could be something as simple as a leaf from a walk you took on a sunny day, or a drawing your older child made to welcome their new sibling. These little details will bring the whole story to life.
Building a family memory box is a beautiful way to capture the essence of your early days as a family. It’s a collection of love, joy, and milestones that will forever hold special meaning. As your little one grows, it will become a treasure trove of memories that they, too, will hold dear when they look back at the beginning of their own story.
I hope this inspires you to start your own memory box. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or adding to a growing collection of keepsakes, these are the moments that make life truly extraordinary. If you ever need help capturing those milestones with a photoshoot, I’d be honoured to be part of your family’s story.
